Jan Botha is an emeritus professor at the Centre for Research on Evaluation, Science and Technology (CREST) at Stellenbosch University. He holds a doctoral degree in New Testament Studies (1991). He taught Hellenistic Greek at different universities in South Africa during the first part of his career and received the Rector’s Award for Excellence in Teaching. From 1998-2014 he worked in different capacities as manager and administrator at Stellenbosch University, including from 2007-2014 as Senior Director for Institutional Research and Planning. He served on national policy-making task teams of the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) [including the National Policy Framework for Higher Education Internationalisation in South Africa (2020)] and the Council for Higher Education (CHE) [including the National Programme Accreditation Framework and Criteria and the Doctoral Qualification Standard (2018-2019)].
He is a past president of the Southern African Association for Institutional Research (SAAIR). He regularly presents courses and workshops on higher education policy and management and on doctoral supervision. He is the editor and co-author of Institutional Research in South African Higher Education. Intersecting Contexts and Practices (SUNMEDIA, 2016) and Utilization of South African Research on Higher Education (SUNMEDIA, forthcoming in 2021) as well as articles and chapters in scholarly journals and books. He has supervised seven PhD and 18 Masters students to completion. He is course leader of the online CREST Course for Doctoral Supervisors at African Universities, developed with the support of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and offered since 2018, that has (by 2022) trained more than 550 supervisors across 32countries in Africa.
