Project Title: Gender, Sexualities & Education

Scope of Research: The research relates to gender, sexuality and schooling, examining how educational practices, discourses, and structures normalise cisheteronormativity, along with how these are resisted within schools and through contemporary forms of activism.

Award Criteria and Details:

  • The candidate will be expected to conduct and publish the results of the research in high-impact and relevant journals.
  • The candidate will have the opportunity to work on individual research as well as to work within a team (Doctoral, Masters and Hons level students), and in addition, to gain experience in supervision.
  • Limited mentoring and supervision of post-graduate students will also be required.

Conditions of the Fellowship:

  • The fellow shall be based in the Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology, Stellenbosch, South Africa, for the duration of the fellowship. For more information, see https://www0.sun.ac.za/sociology/
  • The fellowship is available for two years, subject to the availability of funds and satisfactory academic progress.
  • The value of the fellowship is R230 000 per year and tax-free.
  • Postdoctoral fellows are not appointed as employees and are therefore not eligible for employee benefits.
  • Commencement of duties: the beginning of 2023.
  • The host of the fellowship is Professor Dennis A Francis, Professor of Sociology, Stellenbosch University, South Africa.
