Since the early 1990s, global change has accelerated in a number of domains, ranging from travel and internet connectivity to world trade, energy use and urbanisation. The global system lacks a thermostat, leading to its becoming overheated, with severe consequences for human options, biological diversity and cultural variation. The unintentional consequences of accelerated modernity result from unfettered neoliberal capitalism coupled with fast technological change, and indicate that humanity finds itself at a crossroads. In order to curtail and reverse our currently destructive path, it is necessary to develop a new narrative about human progress, decoupled from extraction and exploitation.

Join us as Prof Thomas Hylland Eriksen takes us through the fascinating topic that is Overheating: Implications of runaway global change.
