We are excited to feature A’ishah Ebrahim as she shares her journey through the Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) programme in Sustainable Development. A’ishah, a graduate of the 2022 PGDip programme and currently serving as the Learning Coordinator for the 2023 PGDip programme, offers valuable insights into her experience and the transformative impact of the programme. Her story serves as an inspiration for prospective students and showcases the exceptional opportunities provided by the PGDip at Stellenbosch University’s Centre for Sustainability Transitions (CST).

A’ishah’s journey in tertiary education has been characterised by a passion for research, learning, and the pursuit of knowledge. With a background in Occupational Therapy and a master’s degree in Transdisciplinary Health and Development Studies, A’ishah recognized the profound impact of teaching and research on her career path.

A’ishah’s motivations for enrolling in the PGDip in Sustainable Development were deeply rooted in her fascination with the politics of power and development. Her master’s thesis, which examined the impact of COVID-19 on women’s labour, revealed themes related to sustainable development and resilience. Coupled with her intellectual curiosity, A’ishah’s decision to pursue the PGDip allowed her to explore these thought-provoking questions and embark on building a career in the field of sustainable development.

Reflecting on her experience, A’ishah found the PGDip to be immensely rewarding.

“I became attuned to the beauty of variance in perspectives, histories and truths whilst also continuously practising the art of critical thinking. These insights were inspired by conversations in the classroom, written work of module assignments and creative approaches to teaching and learning.”

A’ishah’s meaningful experiences not only ignited her passion for further studies but also fueled her desire to contribute to the teaching and learning environment of the PGDip programme. As a testament to her commitment, A’ishah has taken on the role of PGDip Learning Coordinator for the 2023 programme, where she plays a pivotal role in shaping the educational journey of current students.

The PGDip has equipped A’ishah with a new language and a profound connection to others and her surroundings. Through conscious practice, she has become a mentor for current students within the programme. A’ishah appreciates the transformative potential of teaching and learning, witnessing how programme insights have empowered individuals to effect change in their workplaces and develop a renewed sense of self. With aspirations in the field of teaching, learning, and research, A’ishah acknowledges the profound impact these areas can have on individuals and society at large.

When asked to provide advice for prospective PGDip students, A’ishah emphasises the importance of being open-minded, critically engaging with the programme, and embracing the opportunity to learn, unlearn, and relearn. The PGDip offers multiple avenues for engagement, encouraging students to involve their mind, body, and soul in the learning process.

Looking ahead, A’ishah envisions a future career in teaching, learning, and research. She recognizes that the beauty of this field lies not in having a rigid plan but in cultivating a vision that serves as daily inspiration.

A’ishah Ebrahim’s journey through the PGDip in Sustainable Development exemplifies the transformative power of education, research, and collaboration fostered by the CST.
