SU African Music Ensemble is a celebration of indigenous sub-Saharan African music primarily from South Africa and Zimbabwe. In addition to the academic programme, the ensemble sings, performs marimbas, uhadi, umrhubhe, mbira, ancestral drums and the djembe. Most of this music is centuries-old and is taught through an oral-based pedagogy and artist-in-residence. The ensemble offers students the opportunity to gain a broader understanding of indigenous, contemporary and postcolonial life in Africa through participation in music practices and opportunities to perform these expressive arts at semester-end concerts featuring guest artists.
