The Waitrose Foundation, set up by the Waitrose Supermarket in the United Kingdom in 2015 with the aim of improving the lives of farm workers and their families in the communities that supply fruit to the supermarket, incorporates 11 farms in the Western Cape, including Timberlea. At Timberlea Farm, school learners attend the media and educational centre after school every afternoon and in 2013, Marion Jeffrey, of Timberlea, approached Felicia Lesch and Pamela Kierman regarding the establishment of a music programme as part of the activities on offer. Lauren du Plooy, Lise Morrison and Rebecca Baatjes, all Service Learning students at the time, initiated the music programme at Timberlea, providing musical activities to learners one afternoon per week.
