We are a flourishing, dynamic String Division with ever-increasing numbers and 2 full-time and 5 part-time lecturers.

Tuition is offered in Violin, Viola, Cello and Double Bass (Performing, First Instrument, Second Instrument).

The Guitar and Harp sections form part of the String Department.

String students receive training of outstanding standard, with many opportunities for solo, ensemble and orchestral playing. The most advanced students become members of the SU Camerata, an ensemble with international exposure, for example performances with Joshua Bell and Pinchas Zukerman.

Our goal is to make every student the best possible performer that they could be. Former students are in prominent positions in South Africa and overseas.
Students regularly receive master classes from visiting lecturers/soloists.
