PSSA Conference 2024

Conference information

The Stellenbosch University Philosophy Department is pleased to announce that the annual conference of the Philosophical Society of Southern Africa will be held at the Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study (STIAS), in Stellenbosch next year: Wed 17 January– Fri 19 January.

Please note that any philosophical topic will be considered.  Abstracts should be prepared for blind review with the author’s details in a separate document (including title of talk) or specified in the body of the email.  Please send abstracts to pssaconference2024@gmail.com.

 

The CAIR AI 4 Society Symposium Series – 16 January

We are also happy to announce that the AI Ethics Research Group at the Centre for AI Research will host the first 2024 edition of this series, the day before the PSSA, also at STIAS.

There is space for 12 papers only. While we prefer a focus on ‘AI and Agency’ as a theme, any abstract on any theme related to AI from a philosophical point of view will be considered.

Please submit abstracts of no more than 300 words to emma.ruttkamp-bloem@up.ac.za by 31 August 2023. More information on fees and registration can be found here.

We look forward to hosting you in Stellenbosch in 2024.

The fee structure is as follows:

  • R2300 for students, postdocs, and non-salaried scholars (the first ten South African doctoral students to have their abstracts accepted will have their conference fees covered by the PSSA and will be notified of this upon acceptance of their abstracts)
  • R3800 for salaried, non-professorial faculty
  • R4300 for professorial faculty (including associate professors)

This fee includes lunches and refreshments on all three days, the conference dinner to be held at STIAS on 18 Jan, and membership of the PSSA for 2024.

The deadline for payment of conference fees and registration is 31 October.  Please register hereAll persons attending must register, regardless of whether their conference fees are being sponsored.

Payment must be made to the PSSA account (see below for bank details).  Please include the following reference (pssa2024_SURNAME) in your payment and confirm your payment via email to PSSA treasurer Prof Anné Verhoef (Anne.Verhoef@nwu.ac.za; cc pssaconference2024@gmail.com)

In cases where a payment is made for more than one party, please ensure that you include in your email all the names of those parties whose fees have been covered.
